Packers: 3 Veteran Candidates to get cut from 2020 roster
These three veteran members of the Green Bay Packers could be at risk of losing their roster spot heading into the 2020 season.
Every year there are surprising cuts across the NFL, and sometimes they even happen on the Green Bay Packers. A prime example came last year when defensive lineman Mike Daniels was suddenly let go. Who will be next?
There are a few candidates who have heard whispers about their roster spot throughout the summer. And with a season full of questions–both COVID-19 and salary cap related–anything could happen. Let’s take a look at three players who could be in danger of losing their roster spot.
3. Jamaal Williams
The Packers saw a huge dropoff in production when Aaron Jones left the field and Jamaal Williams entered. Part of that speaks to how brilliant Jones was in 2019, but Williams isn’t exactly innocent in that role either.
Now he has some competition for the primary back up spot with the addition of second-round pick A.J. Dillon. Dillon is a powerful runner whose style will complement Jones’ nicely. If he outperforms Williams in training camp, Williams could be at risk of losing his spot with the Packers.
2. Montravius Adams
Montravius Adams showed out the last two preseason, earning plenty of praise along the way from the coaching staff and teammates alike. Unfortunately, the reigning Training Camp MVP hasn’t been able to capitalize when the games matter and has been buried on the depth chart. That’s unfortunate considering the lack of inspiring play from defensive linemen not named Kenny Clark a season ago.
Adams is on the final year of his rookie deal and this could be his last chance. Not only with the Packers but across the NFL. He’s a physically gifted player who has never been able to put things together on the field. Hopefully, something clicks in his fourth year.
1. Jake Kumerow
It would be sad to see fan-favorite Jake Kumerow go, but he might be a darkhorse cut candidate. The Packers have a plethora of receivers fighting for the final wide receiver spots including Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, Reggie Begelton, and Darrius Shepherd. It’s possible all of those guys have higher ceilings than Kumerow.
Green Bay might not also be willing to keep six wide receivers as they have in the past. Head coach Matt LaFleur is clearly leaning toward a run-heavy offense which doesn’t rule out the possibility the Packers head into the season with only five receivers. If that’s the case, Kumerow’s chances of making the roster for the third straight year will dwindle.
