Packers: 3 Free Agent Rentals to Help Win Super Bowl
These three one-year pickups in free agency could help the Green Bay Packers achieve their ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.
The Green Bay Packers came oh so close to another Super Bowl appearance in 2019. They went 13-3, won the NFC North and advanced to the NFC Championship game. Unfortunately, they were smacked by the San Francisco 49ers from the jump and ended their season with a whimper.
They didn’t make nearly the splash fans were hoping for this offseason, and some wonder if the gap actually widened between them and other Super Bowl contenders such as the 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.
The Packers’ biggest additions appear to be inside linebacker Christian Kirskey, wide receiver Devin Funchess and quarterback Jordan Love (who will sit behind Aaron Rodgers this season). Barring something unforeseen happening, that’s not enough to push them over the top.
It’s unlikely to happen, but Green Bay could still sign a free agent to bolster their roster as there are a number of legit candidates remaining on the market. With training camp still scheduled to begin in late July, here are three rentals they could pluck from free agency.
3. Logan Ryan, CB
It may seem like Green Bay is set at cornerback, but adding another great coverage man would do wonders for this team. Sure, Kevin King was healthy in 2019 and played the best ball of his career, but Logan Ryan would offer insurance in case he misses time as he did in his first two seasons. Even if King stays healthy again, Logan could become the all-important nickel corner who is basically like a starter anyways–especially since Tramon Williams hasn’t been brought back yet. In today’s pass-happy NFL, having three legit cornerbacks would be a godsend for this defense.
2. Damon Harrison, DL
One of the Packers’ biggest weaknesses is on the defensive line. Other than stud Kenny Clark, nobody showed up to play last season which is a big reason why they struggled to stop the run. Damon Harrison would shore up some of their run-stopping woes and give them an opportunity to sport a balanced defense they could rely on deep into the playoffs.
1. Josh Gordon, WR
Funchess has the potential to be an under-the-radar signing, but Josh Gordon could be the big play guy the Packers need. Given all the attention Davante Adams is likely to consume in 2020, Gordon could feast on individual matchups on the other side and have a great season. It was clear the Packers lacked offensive weapons when they were shut down in the NFC Championship game, and Gordon is the most dangerous weapon available.
