Projecting what the Green Bay Packers’ depth chart at safety could look like heading into training camp of the 2020 season.

The safety position has the potential to be an area of strength for the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2020 season. They have talent at the top of the depth chart as well as good, solid depth.

Everything begins and ends with the steady veteran Adrian Amos. He may not be the flashiest safety to ever come through Green Bay, but he understands his job responsibilities. He was also a great mentor to Darnell Savage Jr. last season. Amos is solid both against the run and in the passing game; he’s the Packers’ rock.

Savage Jr. had his ups and downs as a rookie–as any first year player will have. However, Amos and the coaching staff have the utmost confidence in him and expect great things in Year 2. Savage Jr. has the potential to be the playmaking safety they haven’t had since the likes of Nick Collins. His speed and instincts are that good.

S1: Adrian Amos

S2: Darnell Savage Jr.

S3: Raven Greene

S4: Will Redmond

S5: Vernon Scott

S6: Henry Black

S7: Frankie Griffin

Raven Greene may be one of the most underrated players on the Packers’ roster. He missed most of last year with an injury and the Packers’ defense suffered because of it. He’s exactly the versatile safety defensive coordinator Mike Pettine loves, as Greene can play around the line of scrimmage when needed. He’ll be a huge boost to this unit if he can stay healthy all season.

Will Redmond was Greene’s replacement last season and, although played admirably, he just doesn’t have enough juice to be an impact player. Still, the experience was invaluable and he is a solid fourth safety on the depth chart given he can fill in when needed.

It’s unlikely the Packers keep another safety on the final roster after Redmond, but that doesn’t mean the other guys don’t have a chance. Vernon Scott is a seventh round pick in this year’s draft. He will compete for the hybrid safety/linebacker position that is Greene’s to lose, and if he puts enough pressure on Redmond, the coaching staff will have a difficult decision to make.

Both Henry Black and Frankie Griffin are undrafted free agents. Unless something unexpected happens, both players are more likely candidates for the practice squad than an actual spot on the roster.
