Josiah Deguara

To cap off the Green Bay Packers’ first three rounds of the draft, they made another head-scratching selection in Cincinnati tight end, Josiah Deguara. However, shortly after the draft, we would learn that in LaFleur’s offense, Deguara is going to be an H-back and play a similar role to what Kyle Juszczyk does for the San Francisco 49ers.

In Kyle Shanahan’s offense, Juszczyk plays a very important role as he is the jack-of-all-trades, transitioning from one duty to the next with ease, and he has even been referred to by Shanahan as irreplaceable.

While we shouldn’t assume that Deguara is going to be as effective as Juszczyk is, if he can at least be productive and effective, he is going to play a major role in Matt LaFleur’s offense.

What LaFleur is striving for is that unpredictability, and he’s looking to achieve that by running different plays, from similar formations, and with the same personnel. This is where Deguara’s skill-set is needed and could make him a difference-maker.

In college, he was a proven pass-catcher, a very good blocker, especially against the run, and he can be lined up just about anywhere. This is going to create mismatches for himself, as well as his teammates, and give this offense some of that unpredictability that LaFleur desires.

Now, it’s been an unusual offseason, and this is a complicated role for a rookie, given that there are so many responsibilities. So while his impact may not be immediate, I cannot wait to see how Deguara is utilized in this offense. The sky’s the limit on what LaFleur can do with him.
