The Right Side of the OL

While the left side of the offensive line may be the best in football, the right tackle and right guard positions this season are quite worrisome.

Sure, Billy Turner at guard was an upgrade over Byron Bell, but that’s also not saying a lot either. He was up and down for much of the 2019 season, and whether you look at Pro Football Focus’ metrics or Andy Herman’s of Packer Report, Turner was below-average this past year.

Then at tackle is Rick Wagner, who will be taking over for Bryan Bulaga. Wagner is also coming off a down 2019 season, but even at his best, he’s no Bulaga. On top of that, he’s battled injuries for much of his career, starting all 16 games just one time since 2014.

And while Lane Taylor could be a suitable backup for Turner at guard if he’s injured or struggling, the Green Bay Packers don’t have that at right tackle. If Wagner is injured or struggling, Green Bay could be in a world of hurt at right tackle as there is very little experience on this roster.

With what sounds like an even bigger emphasis on the run game this season, the Packers have to be able to run to the right side effectively if they are going to be successful. Not to mention that Aaron Rodgers likes to hang on to the football and keeping him upright is always going to be a top priority.

The hope is that Turner and Wagner can regain some version of their past forms, and if they can, the right side of the offensive line should be alright. However, that remains to be seen, and based on their most recent play, there’s cause for concern entering the new season.
