Green Bay Packers: 5 Free Agent Additions That Still Make Sense
By Paul Bretl
Tramon Williams CB
Over the last few years, the Green Bay Packers have certainly invested some premium draft picks into the cornerback position, but once again there are still some question marks heading into the upcoming season. Overall there is just a lack of experience at the position.
Enter Tramon Williams who is 37-years-old but who is also coming off a very good season as the Packers’ primary slot corner.
In fact, according to Pro Football Focus’ grading system, Williams coverage grade of 82.2 was the seventh-best among corners last season who played in at least 20 percent of their team’s defensive snaps. On top of that, he added two interceptions, five pass breakups, allowed only two touchdowns, and opposing quarterbacks had a passer rating of only 86.5 when targeting him.
Looking ahead to this season, with the emergence of Chandon Sullivan in 2019, it looks like he is more than capable of taking over slot duties this year. So by no means is the signing of Williams meant to stunt Sullivan’s growth or take snaps away from him. If anything I see Williams as a safety blanket instead.
As I’ve already mentioned, there are a lot of unknowns with this position in 2020 and as we’ve seen more often than not, injuries happen in the secondary. Williams will provide experienced depth who can play in the slot or out wide and we know that he is a tremendous locker room presence. Bringing him back seems like a no-brainer.
