Green Bay Packers Running Backs

There has been much ado made about the Green Bay Packers’ lack of offensive weapons, but they have a diverse group of contributors for the 2020 season. However, they only have three guys who have contracts that run through the 2022 season. Those are A.J. Dillion, Josiah Deguara, and Jace Sternberger. Unless you want to count Dexter Williams, but he has a very low chance of even making the roster this year.

The first major decision that the Green Bay Packers have to make is at running back. As previously mentioned, Dillon will be under contract for the foreseeable future and was a second round pick so he is a priority. That would point to either Jamaal Williams or Aaron Jones departing to save cap space as both of their contracts are up at the end of this season.

Williams could even be cut before the season if the front office feels the need to save money or give a roster spot to someone else. All three backs bring different things to the table, but if Dillon can show an ability to be a feature back, then they may let Jones walk in free agency even though he does other things than just run the ball effectively.

With Dillon being a high pick, I can’t imagine the Packers using much more draft capital on the position in the next two drafts. They may try to find a diamond in the rough in a late round or a speedster, but it would be a day three pick and probably a late one.

Finally, there are two running backs that will also be free agents after the season that could be brought in to keep a three-headed rushing attack if Williams or Jones are let go. They are T.J. Yeldon and Tarik Cohen. Both are speedy running backs that would be a great change of pace to Dillon and can contribute in the receiving game as both of them have had seasons of over 50 receptions.

Green Bay Packers Wide Receivers

Next is the wide receivers. This gets complicated and blurry because none of them have contracts that run through 2022 except Reggie Begelton, and essentially none of it is guaranteed. The only two guys currently on the roster that I would say have a really good chance of still being here for 2022 are Davante Adams and Allen Lazard.

Devin Funchess, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown all can prove themselves as contributing pieces this season, but as of now, I don’t think any of them have done quite enough to warrant a new contract. As the Packers are steering themselves toward a run-oriented offense, they may not put a lot of money or draft capital into receivers, but they very well could still spend a second or third-round pick in one of the next two drafts to bolster the receiving corps.

A few free agent options would be Curtis Samuel, Danny Amendola, or Julian Edelman to get an experienced slot player or Christian Kirk if they wanted to get a higher profile receiver who can make big plays at any time.

Green Bay Packers Tight Ends

Finally, there are the tight ends. Sternberger and Deguara will still be under contract for the 2022 season and are essentially locks to be on the roster unless they really underperform. Both should play big roles in the offense in the coming years as the Green Bay Packers shift to bulkier personnel groupings.

However, Robert Tonyan is the wild card of the group as he has shown flashes of ability, but isn’t very consistent. After using a third-round pick on Sternberger last season, and their third-rounder on Deguara this draft, I doubt they would use a high pick on a tight end in the next couple of years, but they may use a fourth or fifth-round pick to get a blocking tight end to replace Marcedes Lewis after this season.

As the tight end is a position that the Green Bay Packers new regime values, they could spend money on the position in free agency. Three guys that would command good money, but would make an impact are Mark Andrews, David Njoku, and Trey Burton.
