3. Didn’t Add Defensive Depth

The defense was a pleasant surprise last year and was the strength of the Packers. Smith and Smith provided the unit with a dangerous pass rush that kept quarterbacks uncomfortable at all times. They were also energetic on and off the field, establishing a new culture of closeness in Green Bay.

There wasn’t much turnover in the offseason, with the exception of Blake Martinez signing elsewhere, Tramon Williams remaining a free agent and Christian Kirskey entering the picture as the new starting inside linebacker. Green Bay has the starting-caliber players to put another good product on the field in 2020, however, they don’t have good depth behind those top players.

Kenny Clark got very little help from his fellow defensive linemen in 2019 and that’s unlikely to change next year. If Kirksey goes down–he’s only played in nine total games the last two years–the reigns will be handed to the likes of Oren Burks, Ty Summers or Kamal Martin. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine likes to start a fifth defensive back in place of a second inside backer, but he’ll be forced to rely on Chandon Sullivan or Raven Greene this year.

The Packers didn’t need to add another huge name on defense. However, it would’ve been nice if they added some quality depth. They were extremely healthy last year and that’s unlikely to happen again. If just one or two starters go down, they’ll be in a tough spot.
