5 Packers Likely Entering Final Season in Green Bay
All good things must come to an end, and these five players are likely playing their last season as a member of the Green Bay Packers.
The Green Bay Packers have a lot of work to do both on the field and in the front office in 2020.
On the field, the players set to prove their 2019 season wasn’t a fluke like some critics claim. They’ll try to build on their momentum and see if they can get even closer to achieving the ultimate goal of bringing home another Lombardi trophy.
The challenge ahead of general manager Brian Gutekunst and his staff might be even bigger. They have a number of key players heading for free agency in 2021 including Kenny Clark, David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones, among others.
It will be a very difficult balancing act to keep everyone, likely forcing them to prioritize where they want to spend their money. Due to that, these five players might be in their last season with the Packers.
Marcedes Lewis
Marcedes Lewis is entering his third season in Green Bay after he re-upped with another one-year deal this offseason. Lewis is an afterthought in the passing game, but his run-blocking prowess still deserves recognition. He’ll be a free agent again in 2021 and it’s unclear how much he has left in the tank at 36-years-old. Besides, Green Bay has now spent back-to-back third round picks on tight ends so the hope is Jace Sternberger and Josiah Deguara can take over at the position.
Montravius Adams
The annual Training Camp MVP, Montravius Adams has failed to live up to the hype he garners every preseason. He’ll have one more opportunity to improve in Green Bay this year, but don’t expect anything major to happen. He’s an unrestricted free agent next year and has given the Packers few reasons to retain him.
Lane Taylor
Once the starting left guard, Lane Taylor has been firmly replaced by Elgton Jenkins. This leaves Green Bay in a difficult spot; although he provides good depth, his $5.5 million salary ranks fourth among offensive linemen on the team and is a hefty price tag to carry for a backup. It appears he’s going to stick around in 2020, but this will probably be his final season, as he searches for a starting job elsewhere next year.
Jamaal Williams
The Packers have a plethora of decisions to make at running back. Both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones are entering the final seasons of their rookie contracts and they drafted A.J. Dillon in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. They won’t bring back both Williams and Jones. And given Jones ascension to stardom, it would be hard to justify letting him go, leaving Williams as the odd man out.
Kevin King
After playing in 15 combined games in his first two seasons due to injuries, Kevin King played in 15 last year. That was a promising sign for a promising player plagued by injuries throughout his career. Unfortunately, his play was up and down even when he was healthy, sparking lots of questions about his return to the Packers next year.
