4 Packers Who Could Lose Their Roster Spot in 2020
These four members of the Green Bay Packers are at risk of losing their roster spot and being cut ahead of the start of the 2020 NFL Season.
There’s a clear shift happening in Green Bay, as head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst attempt to shape the Packers in their own image.
It began last season when Green Bay used the majority of their resources to stack up on defense. In free agency, they signed outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith as well as safety Adrian Amos to lucrative deals. They then used their two first-round picks in the NFL Draft on another outside linebacker and safety.
Even their other high priced free agent signing (a guard) and their second and third-round selections (a left guard and tight end) signaled a shift away from their pass-heavy offense that dominated the franchise for years.
With all of the changes, the additional personnel added and underwhelming performances, these four players are at risk of losing their roster spot this season.
Cole Madison
Cole Madison has had an interesting path in the NFL so far. After being selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, he missed the entire 2018 season due to personal reasons. He returned last year, and was able to stick on the roster all season, but it’s unclear if he’s an NFL-caliber player. Failing to appear in a game in 2019, he’s on the verge of being cut unless something major changes in his play. The Packers added three more offensive linemen in the draft, all of whom are directly challenging Madison for a roster spot.
Equanimeous St. Brown
One of three wide receivers the Packers selected in the middle rounds of the 2018 draft, Equanimeous St. Brown could be the next wide receiver to go (J’Mon Moore has already been cut). He missed all of last season with an injury and now has added competition at his position. With Davante Adams, Devin Funchess, Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling clearly ahead of him, he’ll have to battle with Jake Kumerow and Darrius Shepherd for a roster spot. And how many wide receivers are the suddenly run-heavy Packers willing to keep?
Jamaal Williams
Speaking of run-heavy, Jamaal Williams has been Green Bay’s backup running back for a few years now. Unfortunately, there’s been a huge dip in production from when Aaron Jones is on the field to when Williams replaces him. We saw Tyler Ervin flash a bit late last season and now the Packers added a second rounder in A.J. Dillon. Dillon could be the thunder to Jones lightning and, if that’s the case, it could spell a premature exit for Williams.
Josh Jackson
Packers’ fans everywhere were ecstatic when Josh Jackson fell to them in the second round of the 2018 draft. Unfortunately, he’s been a disappointment on the field in his first two seasons, only playing in 10 percent of the defensive snaps last season. The only thing that might save him is the lack of depth ahead of him, as Green Bay has yet to bring back Tramon Williams. Even if Jackson sticks around this season, his days might be numbered in the NFL.
