Milwaukee Brewers Mock Draft Roundup 1.0
By Paul Bretl
The 2020 MLB Draft is less than four weeks away. Here is who a few of the draft analysts have the Milwaukee Brewers taking in the first round.
With the outbreak of the coronavirus, the Milwaukee Brewers season is still on hold and there are major implications when it comes to the draft.
For a while we weren’t even sure when the draft was going to take place but we now know that it will be held on June 10th and 11th. However, instead of the traditional 40 rounds, the draft will be only five rounds in 2020 which will have a huge impact on minor league organizations in the following years.
We also know that the draft will take place remotely just as the NFL did and that there are rules in place dictating how and when teams can reach out to undrafted prospects. Not to mention that the pay for these players is going to be affected as well.
However, while it is unfortunate that the draft has to be shortened and it certainly reduces the chances of the Brewers landing some eventual impact players, the reason that we are here today is to take a look at a few mock drafts and see who the draft analysts have the Milwaukee Brewers taking in the first-round.
After trading away several high-profile prospects in recent years to help them compete at the big league level, many consider the Brewers’ minor league system quite depleted. And while they won’t be able to load up on prospects in the draft as they usually do, Milwaukee will hopefully hit on and add some talent in the five rounds of this year’s draft.
So without further ado, let’s take a peek at who the Milwaukee Brewers might be taking with the 20th overall pick in this year’s draft.
My MLB Draft
Pete Crow-Armstrong – OF – Harvard Westlake HS
Prospects Live Scouting Report:
"PCA has been on radars for years and had long been rumored to be in the 1-1 conversation before an up and down summer dropped his stock. A plus runner, PCA is more quick than fast, but has elite instincts in centerfield with an above average arm and projects as an elite defensive value. He has shown more swing and miss than expected, but has a simple clean swing and his diamond kinetics is full of truly electric bat speed metrics that portend to more future power. PCA rebounded for team USA to hit .364/.405/.606 with seven XBH in nine games. PCA isn’t quite Kelenic, but he will go a long way towards healing the fanbases’ grieving hearts and is worth the likely overslot bonus he would receive here."
Kiley McDaniel – ESPN
Garrett Mitchell – CF – UCLA
Here is what McDaniel has to say about Mitchell:
"“Opinions vary wildly on Mitchell, with some clubs thinking he’s a top-10 talent and others saying they wouldn’t take him in the first round due both to his on-field performance and demeanor. The Brewers are more in that first camp, and Mitchell probably finds a home in this area of the draft.”"
Prospects Live
Jordan Walker – 3B – Decatur HS
This is what Kyler of Prospects Live has to say about Walker and his fit with the Brewers:
"Walker possesses some of the best power potential in the class. With his huge 6-foot-5 frame, easy loft, and bat speed, Miller Park could be a haven for Walker. He is quick for his size at the moment but figure to lose a step once he continues to grow and add strength to his frame. He has the agility and plus arm to stick at third right now and could easily stick in right field if need be. There are some questions surrounding how his hit tool will play at the next level, but the Brewers and many others would be drooling over Walker’s potential at this point in the draft."
Dan Zielinski – Baseball Prospects Journal
Tanner Burns – RHP – Auburn
Dan had this to say about Burns:
"“Tanner Burns is a 6-0, 215-pound right-hander who has a strong and athletic build. He throws a mid-90s fastball. He might not have the upside as some of the other college pitchers but profiles as an effective major-league starter.”"
Kieth Law – The Atheltic
Bryce Jarvis – RHP – Duke
"“Jarvis was draft-eligible as a sophomore last year but wasn’t signable for worth, going in the 37th round to the Yankees. The son of long-time big leaguer Kevin Jarvis came out throwing harder and with better command and control this spring, possibly enough to get himself into the first round – especially if he’s willing to take a discount as a 22.5-year-old junior.”"
Jim Callis – MLB.com
Cole Wilcox – RHP – Georgia
"“Wilcox also drew first-round interest as a Georgia high schooler two years ago, and he did a better job of harnessing an arsenal with the potential for three plus pitches as a sophomore this spring.”"
