Green Bay Packers: Winners & Losers from the Offseason
By Paul Bretl
Winners
Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown
I’ll group these three together because they are all winners for the same reason, which is that the Packers didn’t select a wide receiver in the draft. Sure they would sign Devin Funchess in free agency, but there is no guarantee that he will end up with more playing time than any one of these three by the end of the season.
After last season’s performance, many considered finding a bonafide No. 2 receiver for this offense Green Bay’s biggest need this offseason. However, with no high-profile addition, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown can continue to battle for those WR2 reps and they should all see ample playing time.
Chandon Sullivan, Josh Jackson, Ka’dar Hollman
This time I’ll be grouping these cornerbacks together because it could have been very easy for GM Brian Gutekunst to bring back Tramon Williams to play in the slot once again or to select a corner in what was a fairly deep draft at the position.
However, the Green Bay Packers will instead rely on these young corners in 2020 and as a result, they should all see more playing time this season.
Matt LaFleur
Last season this Green Bay Packers’ offense was a combination of what Matt LaFleur wanted to run and what Mike McCarthy had established over the years. But with the first three picks in the draft, LaFleur got three players that he believes will help his offense flourish.
In the first round, the Packers selected Jordan Love to be the quarterback of the future and one that can be molded to fit LaFleur’s offense. Then in Rounds 2 and 3 they would add an explosive running back in A.J. Dillon and the versatile, soon to be H-back Josiah Deguara who will take on the Kyle Juszczyk role here in Green Bay.
