Devonta Smith – Alabama

Devonta Smith is the calm before Waddle’s storm. Alabama’s senior receiver is a smooth route runner who was asked to run the entire tree for Alabama and he ran it as well as anybody. Smith led the ridiculously talented ‘Bama receiving core in yards (1,256) and TDs (14), on 68 receptions in 2019.

Smith has some of the best hands returning in 2020, and with a decent catch radius, he snags everything thrown his way. Positioned on the line of scrimmage in the SEC, Smith sees plenty of press coverage. Yet he consistently finds a chink in the armor in the man across from him and finesses himself open.

His elite footwork certainly helps and that footwork is also the reason for his crisp route running. Add in his elite long-speed and Smith is almost uncoverable… almost.

At 6’ 1” 175 lbs, Smith is thin from top to bottom. And while he’s done well against press coverage, there are reps where he’s absolutely stonewalled. I fear we’ll see more of that if Smith doesn’t add weight and strength. He may have to lineup off the LOS in the NFL.

If Smith could be the same player at 190 lbs, he’d be in the same tier as Ross and Chase. But the real Devonta Smith could fall to the Green Bay Packers in the first round and he’d be a great compliment to Davante Adams.
