Packers: 3 Undrafted Free Agents That’ll Push for a Roster Spot
By Paul Bretl
Stanford Samuels CB – Florida State
Jaire Alexander has the makings of being a future All-Pro while Kevin King was able to stay healthy and put together a breakout season in 2019. However, overall, there is a lack of depth at the cornerback position and with players like Josh Jackson and Ka’dar Hollman, just a lot of unknowns as well.
This leaves the door open for an undrafted free agent like Stanford Samuels to swipe a roster spot.
During his time at Florida State, Samuels would start 23 games and appear in 37 total. In 2019 he was an honorable mention All-ACC while allowing a completion percentage of only 51 percent and coming away with two interceptions, seven pass breakups while giving up only two touchdowns.
Unfortunately for Samuels, it was a 4.65 40-yard dash time at the combine that sent him falling down draft boards. In fact, in a recent article on The Athletic by Bob McGinn (subscription required), two separate scouts mentioned that they had third and fourth round grades on Samuels prior to the combine. So landing him as a UDFA is a tremendous value for the Green Bay Packers.
With Samuels’ ability in press-man coverage, he would be an ideal fit for Mike Pettine’s system and in the right situation as a team’s third or fourth cornerback option, he has the potential to carve out a nice NFL career.
Of these three players that I’ve covered, I give Samuels the best odds of making Green Bay’s final 53-man roster.
