3 Important Players to the Green Bay Packers Success in 2020
By Paul Bretl
Rick Wagner
For about the last decade the Green Bay Packers have been fortunate at the right tackle position as Bryan Bulaga has been one of the best in the game. Tackle is a premier position in the NFL and one that often goes unnoticed, that is until things are going wrong.
Although Matt LaFleur mentioned after the draft that Rick Wagner will be competing for the starting job, with very little tackle experience on the roster outside of David Bakhtiari, who is really going to push him for those first-team reps? And that’s just one of the issues.
Currently, the Packers have 17 offensive linemen on the 90-man roster but many of them play along the interior or they are inexperienced at the tackle position. Some notable names include Yosh Nijman who has the tools but is still quite raw, Lane Taylor played two weeks at left tackle in 2017, I think by this point we know who Alex Light is, and I have no desire to see Billy Turner out on the edge.
And looking at Wagner’s history, there is a good possibility that one of those players will have to start at right tackle this season. Wagner played in only 12 games in 2019 and since 2014 when he became a starter, he’s started all 16 games just one time.
Not to mention that he is coming off a down season that includes 32 total pressures in only 467 pass-blocking attempts according to Pro Football Focus.
Despite the changes that have taken place, the name of the game in Green Bay is still keeping Aaron Rodges clean in the pocket. And in order for this offense to improve in 2020, Rick Wagner has to find his old form from previous seasons.
