Green Bay Packers Take Safety Vernon Scott in Seventh Round of 2020 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers added potential depth to their secondary by selecting safety Vernon Scott out of TCU in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.
Making their fifth selection on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers added potential depth to their secondary by selecting safety Vernon Scott out of TCU.
Scott played three seasons at TCU and was a full-time player his junior and senior seasons. His junior year, he accrued 36 total tackles with 25 of them coming as solos and one interception. He also deflected three passes that year. He took his game to another level in 2019 when he made 44 total tackles, two of them for loss and picked off one pass (for a 98-yard touchdown!) and deflected seven other passes.
Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine often uses a fifth defensive back in place of a second inside linebacker on his base defenses. This allows him to play a faster and more versatile unit.
Green Bay also has a lot of decisions to make about their secondary in coming seasons. They’ve used a lot of top resources to address the position–first round picks on Jaire Alexander and Darnell Savage, second-rounders on Josh Jackson and Kevin King and big money to Adrian Amos–but have a far from perfect unit. King also set to become a free agent in 2021 and it’s unclear if he’ll become a priority for the team to re-sign.
There’s no saying if Scott could become a potential player on their defense, if he’ll solely be a special teams contributor or if he’ll make the team at all. At this point in the draft, it’s like throwing noodles at the wall and seeing what sticks.
