The Green Bay Packers boosted their offensive line depth, adding Michigan tackle Jon Runyan Jr. with their first pick in round 6 of the 2020 NFL draft.

With the 192nd pick, the Green Bay Packers added much-needed depth to their offensive line and once again, add a Michigan Wolverine to their roster.  Jon Runyan measures at 6’4″ and 306 lbs.

Runyan is the son of former Eagles great Jon Runyan, Sr., who turned in many Pro Bowl seasons followed by a career in the U.S. House of Representatives and now, NFL Vice President of Policy and Rules Administration.  Runyan Jr. brings above-average speed and agility with a RAS of 8.46.

Like his Dad, Runyan is a smart player and diagnoses what is in front of him well.  He gets where he’s going well, although some of his mechanics at the point of attack will need refining at the next level.

Runyan offers versatility at both tackle and guard although projects as a guard in the NFL.  He’ll get a chance to push Lane Taylor, Lucas Patrick and Cole Madison in training camp.

Here is what Joe Marino of The Draft Network had to say about Runyan in his final scouting report:

"“Michigan offensive tackle Jon Runyan is not what you expect him to be on tape, especially if you have his father on your mind who was a former Pro Bowler in the NFL. While the football IQ is obvious, his lack of technique and functional strength are major concerns. His hands are among the most erratic in the class, his body control is poor and he lacks power. Runyan will likely need to play guard in the NFL but his limitations are notable.”"

In 2018, Runyan was cemented as Michigan’s starting left tackle and quickly ascended to the top of the Big 10.  He turned in a stellar 2019 as well, which included facing Ohio State’s Chase Young, who was taken second overall in this draft, and he held his own against the elite pass rusher, mostly in one-on-one protection.

Along with his stellar NFL pedigree, Runyan brings a blue-collar vibe with him to Green Bay, something that should surely endear him to teammates and fans.
