What are the Green Bay Packers doing in the 2020 NFL Draft?
The Green Bay Packers have made confusing move after confusing move so far in the 2020 NFL Draft, but do they have a master plan in place?
Confusion. Bewilderment. Whatever you want to call it–it’s been one weird 2020 NFL Draft for the Green Bay Packers.
It started on Thursday night in the first round when they sent their sole fourth round pick to the Miami Dolphins and jumped up four picks (ahead of four teams who probably wouldn’t have taken a quarterback given their current situations) and selected quarterback Jordan Love out of Utah State. Love was rumored to fall in the draft before Thursday night and some wondered if Green Bay would be the landing spot. It turned out to be the case.
The selection sent Packers’ nation into a frenzy, as the Packers have other dire needs after finishing 13-3 and just one game away from the Super Bowl in 2019. Love will sit behind Aaron Rodgers until Rodgers is ready to retire or Green Bay feels like Love has surpassed him in talent.
It would be one thing if the weirdness stopped there, but it carried over onto Day 2 in a bad, bad way.
With all of the top wide receivers off the board (a HUGE need for the Packers) for their second pick, Green Bay shocked the world again by selecting running back A.J. Dillon out of Boston College. Some experts thought they’d target a running back in this draft considering both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones are set to be free agents in 2021, but not this early. And not after they went with a quarterback with their first pick.
That made two players who wouldn’t have a large impact on the upcoming season and two guys who don’t address the immediate needs the team has at wide receiver.
Unfortunately, the trend continued for a third straight pick when the Packers selected H-back/tight end Josiah Deguara out of Cincinnati. Deguara is less of a pass catcher and more of a run blocker at his position. Although the Packers needed a tight end, many thought they’d acquire one who can help the passing game, not the running game.
That makes three rounds and three highly questionable picks. It’s certainly three players who won’t help in the 2020 season. Speaking of 2020, are the Packers drafting as if there won’t be a season next year? That’s a wild accusation, but could turn out to be the situation given the world’s current state of affairs.
As they return to the draft room on Saturday for their third and final day, the Packers have six picks remaining, however, they are all in the fifth round or later. No matter what they do today, they won’t find a player who can make an immediate contribution. There is a lot of head scratching and question asking going on in Packer nation, and for good reason. Their plan isn’t clear right now, the only hope is that future provides further clarity.
