Packers Pick Tight End Josiah Deguara in Third Round
The Green Bay Packers added to their tight end depth by selecting Josiah Deguara in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Green Bay Packers continued their shocking of the draft world by selecting tight end Josiah Deguara in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Packers have been far from conventional so far this offseason and this trend certainly continues with this selection.
Deguara played five seasons at the University of Cincinnati and was a full-time starter his last two seasons. He finished his senior season with 39 receptions for 504 yards and seven touchdowns. That’s not very impressive.
The good news is Deguara loves his craft and takes it very seriously. He loves to put his body into defenders and block them with a passion. That’s a positive for a team who loves to run the ball under head coach Matt LaFleur.
He’s not so shabby when it comes to pass-catching, either. He has good hands and knows how to exploit zone defenses. He’s not the greatest at hauling in inaccurate passes but he makes the contested catches when the throw is right on. He definitely has the potential to contribute from multiple positions across the line of scrimmage.
The difficult part for the Packers will be finding a place for him to fit in alongside Jace Sternberger and company. He’s not a great athlete and certainly has holes in his game. Only time will tell.
The Packers have certainly taken a different path to this draft, focusing on players that aren’t exactly common sense picks. Deugara certainly fits that mold, but we’ll see if he’s a good player in time.
