Green Bay Packers Roundtable: 2020 NFL Draft Preview
By Paul Bretl
Who is your ideal pick for the Packers at 30th overall?
Mike
After everything that’s come out this past weekend, if Mekhi Becton falls and is there at 30, Brian Gutekunst better hope his internet is fully functioning, because that giant could be the next great right tackle. At 6’7″ and 369 pounds and with the footwork that he does, his ceiling cannot be seen. There’s no way he should drop that far, but Laremy Tunsil was considered a Top 5 lock before his infamous gas mask photo was leaked, causing him to fall. Becton’s failed test could do the same.
A week ago, this wouldn’t be realistic in the slightest as Becton was being mentioned as a lock for the top ten picks. But in this bizarre year, a failed test could be catastrophic for a prospect who gets any sort of red flag this late in the process. Teams can’t bring him in to discuss it, and there’s only so much a video call can do. With other offensive line prospects rising, Becton could see a fall and if he would slide to 30, it would be a dream scenario for the Green Bay Packers.
Brian
I really want to say one of the wide receivers, but I’m going to go with a defensive back because Mike Pettine’s base defense basically has a fifth defensive back instead of a second inside linebacker. Someone who’s extremely versatile and can play in the slot, close to the line of scrimmage and even back at safety. Someone who can help both in the run and against the pass. Someone who’s extremely intelligent and can diagnosis plays quickly. That someone is Antoine Winfield.
Kenny
There are a lot of guys that I would be happy with at 30, but Denzel Mims is my favorite of them all. It’s a deep wide receiver draft, so picking one in the first round may be a mistake when a different position can be addressed, but Mims could make an immediate impact and take a lot of pressure off of Davante Adams.
Mims is fast, running a 4.38 40-yard dash, has great hands, and makes contested catches. Also, he would continue a great Packer tradition of having willing and capable blockers on the outside, following in the footsteps of Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver who were never afraid to get their nose dirty.
Jacob
Justin Jefferson checks all the boxes, but whether or not he falls to Green Bay remains a mystery. He’s a big slot that had big-time production in the best offense in college football last season and he fits very well with Aaron Rodgers. If he’s available at 30, the Packers should run the card up. If he falls past the Vikings’ second first-round pick (25), the Packers should look to make a move up for him.
Paul
I actually have two players that I would absolutely love for the Green Bay Packers to land. The first being Justin Jefferson who will step in right away and give them a presence in the slot that they haven’t had since the days of prime Randall Cobb. Then the other player is Josh Jones, the offensive tackle from Houston. I see him as the fifth-best tackle in this class and someone who could start right away if needed.
