Green Bay Packers: Grading First Wave of Free Agency Moves
Exclusive Rights Free Agents
That Packers placed a one-year tender on each of their five exclusive rights free agents that will be worth the minimum salary next season. In order to qualify as an exclusive rights free agents, one must have two or fewer NFL seasons and an expiring contract.
Allen Lazard, WR
This was a no-brainer. Lazard showed the most promise of any of these five players and has the potential to turn into a true number three receiver in Green Bay’s offense. He presents a big target for Aaron Rodgers and is able to use his body to box out defensive backs and high-point the ball. The Packers couldn’t afford to lose Lazard and they made the easy decision.
Grade: A
Jake Kumerow, WR
Jake Kumerow came out of nowhere two seasons ago and made the final roster out of training camp this year. A fan favorite, Kumerow always ignites the crowd when the ball finds him. His limited athletic ability caps the impact he can make, but it’s nice to have some depth at the position.
Grade: B-
Robert Tonyan, TE
The Packers have very little depth and skill at their tight end position, potentially opening the door for some serious playing time for Robert Tonyan next season. Tonyan has made some big plays in the preseason, but that hasn’t carried over to the regular season. With Jimmy Graham gone and only Marcedes Lewis and Jace Sternberger on the roster, Tonyan could see the field in 2020.
Grade: B
Tyler Lancaster, DL
The Packers struggled to stop the run and Tyler Lancaster was a big part of that. However, he has some potential to be a contributor and played the third-most snaps among defensive linemen last season. Hopefully, he can take a step forward next season and provide some more consistent play.
Grade: B-
Chandon Sullivan, DB
Chandon Sullivan will likely never become an impact defensive player, but he provides depth and competition at the position. He did break up six passes and had one interception last season.
Grade: C
