Green Bay Packers: 3 Free Agency & Draft Scenarios
By Paul Bretl
Free agency and the draft go hand in hand, so let’s run through 3 scenarios and see how the Green Bay Packers’ free agency decisions affect how they attack the draft.
The NFL’s legal tampering period begins today and on Wednesday the 18th, free agency will kick off as well. And for the Green Bay Packers, they – like most teams – have a number of positional needs that have to be filled.
Of course, the first few that come to mind are the tackle, wide receiver, and the inside linebacker positions. But on top of that, they should add to the interior defensive line to provide Kenny Clark with some help, they are lacking tight end depth, and there are just a lot of unknowns in the cornerback room.
Naturally up to this point in the offseason, with the hundreds of mock drafts that have been released, these positions, particularly tackle, receiver, and linebacker, have been represented quite well within the first few rounds of these mocks. And for good reasons.
However, as we all know, free agency and the draft go hand in hand. If the Packers sign a top linebacker, for example, then the odds of them taking Kenneth Murray or Patrick Queen in the first round greatly decreases.
So with the free agency period about to begin, I wanted to run through three different scenarios, showing how a significant signing at either linebacker, receiver, or tackle could affect how Green Bay approaches the first three rounds of the draft. And for the draft simulations, I’ll be using The Draft Network’s mock draft machine.
Let’s see how this all plays out along with my big takeaways.
