Green Bay Packers: 5 Trade Targets To Upgrade Passing Offense
The Green Bay Packers could always use the trade market to upgrade their passing offense by exploring deals for any of these five players.
With NFL free agency set to begin in just a few days, the Green Bay Packers are preparing to upgrade their team using their available salary cap. There have been rumors that they won’t bring back Bryan Bulaga and they just released Jimmy Graham–helping to maximize the spending power they’ll have this offseason.
One other avenue they could explore to upgrade their team is via trade.
It’s clear they have to upgrade their passing offense using free agency, the draft, trade or all three this offseason. Green Bay simply lacked the firepower to compete with the big boys last season and can’t solely rely on Davante Adams and Aaron Jones if they want to win the Super Bowl in 2021. With all eyes on free agency, let’s take a peek at five trade targets that are on the block:
Marquise Goodwin
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported last week that San Francisco 49er’s wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has been discussed in trade talks. Goodwin would definitely help address the Packers’ speed issues and give them an interesting weapon to use out of the slot. After catching 56 passes for 962 yards in 2017 (both career-highs), he’s failed to surpass 45 receptions or 400 yards in each of the past two seasons. Considering his contract is worth $10 million total over the next two years, he might be a good buy-low candidate.
Alshon Jeffery
Perhaps the complete opposite of Goodwin, Alshon Jeffery is also available according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. At 6-foot-3, Jeffery is a big body who knows how to use his size and strength to his advantage. He also has two 1,000 yard seasons under his belt, although is last one came back in 2014. Injuries have derailed him the last couple of seasons, but he might still have enough left in the tank to make a trade worth it. If it comes at the right price.
Evan Engram
Speaking of injuries, Evan Engram is as big of an injury threat as there is. He hasn’t played a full season since being selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s also in a walking boot following surgery in December and might not be ready until training camp. Still, when he’s on the field, he’s as dangerous of a tight end as there is. He also doesn’t carry the same type of price tag as current free agents such as Eric Ebron and Austin Hooper.
Stefon Diggs
It would be hard to imagine the Packers making a deal with their division rivals the Minnesota Vikings, but the rift between Stefon Diggs and his team is clear. Diggs is a legit receiving threat coming off his second consecutive 1,000 yard season. His contract is also team-friendly considering his production–three years and $34.2 million remaining. He won’t come cheap, but his contract and production will be worth it.
Odell Beckham Jr.
The cream of the trading crop, Odell Beckham Jr. could likely be had for a first round pick. That’s a bit risky considering his history of tirades, but it could all be worth it in the end. Beckham has put up 1000 receiving yards in every season he’s played more than four games. He’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball and would change all the dynamics of the Packers’ offense.
