Green Bay Packers’ Fans Should Know the Name, Denzel Mims
By Paul Bretl
After a terrific Senior Bowl and lighting up the NFL Combine, it’s time that Green Bay Packers’ fans start paying attention to WR Denzel Mims.
At this point, I think it is fair to say that most Green Bay Packers’ fans and draft analysts expect the Packers to select either a wide receiver or an inside linebacker with their 30th overall pick. And because of that, even though we’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of mock drafts released already, oftentimes we’ve seen the same handful of players going to Green Bay.
Of course, some of these names include Kenneth Murray, Patrick Queen, Justin Jefferson, Jalen Reagor, Laviska Shenault, along with a few others. But one name, in particular, that Packer fans should start paying attention to if they already haven’t, is receiver Denzel Mims from Baylor.
With a wide receiver class as loaded as this one is, Mims has been a bit of an afterthought. However, with his performance at the Senior Bowl now coupled with the show that he put on at the NFL Combine, Mims is certainly an option for the Packers in round two and possibly round one.
Mims is an experienced receiver having appeared in 40 games during his career at Baylor. In total, he would finish with just under 3,000 receiving yards at nearly 16 yards per catch with 28 touchdown receptions. And in two of the last three seasons, he was able to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark.
As I alluded to above, Mims began to move up draft boards after his performance at the Senior Bowl where he was consistently open and caught everything in sight. And now he has become a borderline Day 1 draft pick after the on the field tests at the NFL Combine.
Measuring in at 6’3 – 207 pounds, Mims blew everyone away with his 4.38 – 40 yard dash and 6.66 3-cone drill. I don’t know that there is any player who has helped their draft stock over the last 6 weeks more than Denzel Mims.
While of course, his Combine results alone shouldn’t be the sole reason that the Packers – or any team – selects him early on, Mims also has the past production and the overall skill set to be worthy of a round-one selection.
So clearly he is a very good athlete, but Mims is also a physical receiver who has reliable hands and creates good separation off the line of scrimmage. With the Green Bay Packers, Mims would line up out wide, opposite of Davante Adams, and he would give Aaron Rodgers a consistent downfield weapon. Not to mention that he and Rodgers could form quite the one-two punch in the red zone.
Below Kyle Crabbs of The Draft Network gives his scouting report on Mims:
"“Denzel Mims projects as an X-receiver at the NFL level. With his notable catch radius, physical play and high end body control, Mims projects as a potential starter at the pro level. He brings developing routes and effective play side blocking to the field — which will help him find reps early on in his pro career as he looks to add further refinement to his game. Mims enjoyed a career season in 2019 and appears to have the arrow facing up as he transitions into the pro game.”"
As Crabbs’ summed it up, Mims is an ascending player and his overall athleticism and ability to make plays downfield will give this Packers’ offense an element that they didn’t really have in 2019. Especially with the disappointing season that Marquez Valdes-Scantling had.
So as the draft process continues to unfold, in addition to watching the five to ten players that many have the Green Bay Packers linked to, be sure to add Denzel Mims to that list as well.
