As the Green Bay Packers look to upgrade their team, they would be wise to stay away from these three players in free agency this offseason.

The Green Bay Packers figure to have enough money in free agency to sign an impact player or two for next season. There’s no doubt general manager Brian Gutekunst and his staff are busy scouting the free agency class to find the best fit for their team.

If they want to get to the Super Bowl next season, they have a number of needs to address including a playmaker or two or three in the passing game, an inside linebacker, depth on the defensive line and more. Although it’s not a long laundry list of needs, there are certainly holes on this team.

As Gutekunst and company are working to fill those holes, they’d be wise to stay far away from these three top free agents.

Blake Martinez, LB

It was apparent after the Packers’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game that Blake Martinez felt his time in Green Bay was over. He became emotional during his postgame interview, perhaps, signaling he played his last game in the green and gold.

Unfortunately, that should be good for both sides. The Packers would be smart to stay away from Martinez who was the king of racking up meaningless tackles. He constantly brought ball-carriers down, but the bad news is it was constantly four yards after the line of scrimmage. As Green Bay looks to upgrade their speed this offseason, they can begin with letting Martinez walk.

Andrew Whitworth, T

The Packers could potentially be in the market for a starting offensive tackle depending on what happens with Bryan Bulaga. There are some who feel Green Bay wants to bring Bulaga back, but he might become too pricey.

If that’s the case, Green Bay could look for a stopgap player to fill in until they can find a long-term replacement. However, that shouldn’t be Andrew Whitworth.

At 38-years-old, Whitworth’s best days are clearly behind him. After enduring a long run of being one of the best offensive tackles in the game, his name still carries a lot of weight. Unfortunately, his play doesn’t back that up anymore. As Gutekunst tries to figure out his plan for right tackle, he should take Whitworth out of the equation.

Eric Ebron, TE

Green Bay desperately needs to add speed to their offense and desperately needs a tight end. Although Jimmy Graham is still on the roster, it’s only a matter of time until he gets let go in a cap-saving move.

Ebron is one of the better tight ends on the market and one of the more athletic options. Unfortunately, he’s almost constantly underperformed and the Packers can’t afford that mistake again. Let someone else pay big bucks for mediocre production from Ebron.
