The Green Bay Packers don’t necessarily have a need at running back, but they could still target these three in free agency.

The Green Bay Packers have a few pressing needs in free agency this year, but running back isn’t one of them. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams have provided their team with stability at the position over the last few years and are each under contract for one more season.

Regardless, Green Bay would be smart to add depth behind them at the position. Dexter Williams, a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, doesn’t seem ready to contribute any time soon and the Packers might need insurances in case they aren’t the benefactors of the same type of injury luck they had in 2019.

Jones and Williams have each struggled with a few injuries throughout their NFL careers, with the former having the biggest question marks. In each of his first two seasons, Jones suffered a knee injury that cost him significant time. He was able to bounce back in his third season, however, and start all 16 games.

If the Packers want to add insurance in the case of an injury, they could look to these three guys for depth.

Tyler Ervin

The Packers claimed Tyler Ervin late in the season and fourth-year pro provided a huge spark for the Packers on both special teams and the offense. Setting his immediate impact in the return game aside, head coach Matt LaFleur began scheming one or two plays a game for Ervin with most of them coming off a type of jet sweep.

The Packers would be wise to re-sign Ervin after the impact he had on the team last season. He isn’t a guy who could carry the ball 10 times a game, but would provide depth and insurance in the case of an injury.

Ty Montgomery

Once upon a time, Ty Montgomery was a scapegoat for a failing regime. Although his time in Green Bay ended on the sourest of notes, a new head coach could provide for another opportunity.

Montgomery’s flexibility as both a runner and a pass-catcher could open new doors in LaFleur’s scheme. It would be fun to see how he could be used with such a creative coach. And, in the case of an emergency, Montgomery could handle the rock as a runner as well.

C.J. Prosise

Sticking with the theme of versatility, C.J. Prosise might be another running back worthy of a flyer. Although he isn’t a dynamic runner, he can catch the ball out of the backfield and pose as a dual-threat running back. He has struggled with injuries throughout his career and the Packers would have to take a risk on him coming off yet another one that ended his 2019 season.
