Marcedes Lewis

Of the options, bringing back Marcedes Lewis may be the most realistic. For one, he’s already stated that he wants to rejoin the Green Bay Packers for 2020, he’s familiar with the offense, is a solid blocker – which as we all know is important to LaFleur – and he won’t break the bank.

In fact, in 2019 Lewis’ cap hit was just $2.1 million and Green Bay will likely be able to bring him back in 2020 at a similar price. And that is also noteworthy because the dead cap hit will be minimal as well if they need to get out of the contract at some point.

And while those are all certainly valid reasons to bring him back, the return of Lewis does put a lot more pressure on Jace Sternberger and Robert Tonyan to be impact players at the tight end position in 2020. Although Lewis saw more action in the passing game last year, he still only totaled 19 targets, 156 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Lewis is also going to be 36-years-old when the new season begins and even if landing a player of Austin Hooper’s caliber may not be probable, I would like to think that Green Bay can find someone who lands in the middle. Meaning, they aren’t as costly as Hooper but are a more well-rounded tight end option than Lewis.
