We saw it numerous times throughout the regular season, but the Green Bay Packers lack of impact players up the middle was fully exposed in San Francisco. For much of the year, opposing offenses had their way running the ball against the Packers and most of the time, it happened in between the tackles. As fantastic as Kenny Clark is, he needs some additional help.

So far Montravius Adams just hasn’t developed as the team had hoped. Meanwhile, Dean Lowry and Tyler Lancaster are fine players but if you’re relying on them to be your second and third option next to Clark, as we saw, you’re going to run into issues. However, if they are your third and fourth options, things are looking much better.

And this is where the offseason addition of Michael Pierce makes a lot of sense. Pierce just finished up his fourth season with the Baltimore Ravens where he played roughly 50 percent of the team’s defensive snaps in 2019 over 14 starts and totaled 35 tackles, 0.5 sacks, three quarterback hits, and two tackles for loss.

While those numbers certainly aren’t eye-popping by any means, the Ravens don’t ask Pierce to get after the quarterback. Instead he is there to take on blocks and help in the run game. And what do you know? That’s just the kind of player Green Bay needs.

Some more good news is that adding Pierce doesn’t look like it is going to break the bank. At the moment, Spotrac has Pierce landing a two-year contract with an average annual value of $4.7 million in free agency.

Since Milt Hendrickson joined the Packers as the Director of Football Operations, Green Bay has brought in a few former Ravens – which is where Hendrickson previously worked – including Za’Darius Smith and Tim Williams. Could Pierce be their latest addition from Baltimore?
