Recent 2 Round Mock Draft would be Home Run for Green Bay Packers
By Paul Bretl
When the Green Bay Packers are actually on the clock in April, if their first two rounds of the draft look like this mock draft from Joe Marino of The Draft Network, it will be a home run.
The Green Bay Packers are just over a week removed from losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, yet many of us have moved on to the offseason as we begin to look at ways for this team to improve in 2020.
A big contributor to the leap that the Packers took from 2018 to 2019 can be attributed to GM Brian Gutekunst’s successful offseason. Of course, he made four splash free agent signings, but he also hit on some early round draft picks with Darnell Savage in the first round and Elgton Jenkins in round two.
And for Green Bay to take another step forward in 2020, they’ll have to have similar fortune in those early rounds of the NFL draft once again.
As I’m sure most are aware, some positions that the Packers could address in those first two rounds this year include wide receiver, inside linebacker, interior defensive lineman, and even tackle depending on what happens with Bryan Bulaga in free agency.
While there have already been a plethora of mock drafts released with a number of different results, most drafts at this point have just been one round. But as the draft process continues to unfold, we will see the experts continue to dive deeper.
However, there are a brave few who have moved on to the second round and one draft, in particular, from Joe Marino of The Draft Network would be an absolute home run if the board actually fell this way for the Green Bay Packers in April. And if I could sign up for this scenario right now, I think I would.
Round 1, Pick 30: Jalen Reagor WR – TCU
If I have to pick one word to sum up Jalen Reagor, it would be “dynamic” – just get him the ball and watch him go to work. During his three seasons at TCU, Reagor started 39 games and totaled 2,248 receiving yards – including over 1,000 during his Junior campaign – at 15.2 yards per catch, along with 22 touchdowns. It’s also worth pointing out that he had 35 rushing attempts in his career and averaged over nine yards per run.
Here is what Marino had to say about Reagor ending up with the Green Bay Packers:
"“Aaron Rodgers needs more weapons in the passing game and Jalen Reagor brings a skill set that otherwise can’t be found among Green Bay’s current group of receivers. Reagor is an electric athlete that can take the top off the defense and is a threat to create big plays after the catch.”"
Round 2, Pick 62: Patrick Queen LB – LSU
With Blake Martinez likely heading elsewhere in free agency, the Green Bay Packers are in desperate need of an impact player at inside linebacker. Well, look no further than Patrick Queen.
He’s explosive, displays great range, is a sure tackler, and can hold his own in coverage. In fact, Pro Football Focus recorded Queen dropping into coverage on 355 snaps this past season and he gave up only 165 total yards. In today’s NFL, Queen’s skill set is exactly what teams are looking for. My only question at this point, is will he be around at pick 62 in April?
This is what Marino had to say about Queen in his scouting report:
"“Super rangy and he closes down distances rapidly. Quick processor that is fast to flow and he urgently works in pursuit. Operates with excellent spatial awareness as he navigates his course to the football. Fluid and flexible mover in all directions. Lateral mobility is easy and his feet overall are springy. Can be trusted with zone coverage drops when depth is required – will reach those landmarks.Hard-charging backer that slips/undercuts blocks and he finds his way through congested areas of the field. Love his physicality – type of guy that will stick his face in a fan and like it. Explosive hitter both taking on blocks and finishing. Has the tone-setters mentality.Has the reactive athleticism to carry running backs and tight ends into space in man coverage. Takes tight and aggressive angles to the football in pursuit. Ability to time the snap, accelerate and his motor makes him an effective gap shooter. Ascending player that played his best ball down the stretch in his final season.”"
We are still very early in the draft process and certainly a lot will change between now and draft night. However, these are two players that could step in immediately and make big impacts as rookies for the Green Bay Packers, which as previously discussed is quite necessary.
I mentioned it above but I’ll say it again: at this point if this is how the first two rounds unfold for the Packers, I will be thrilled.
