Green Bay Packers: 7 Round Mock Draft Simulation & Big Takeaways
By Paul Bretl
Round 7, Pick 201: Naquan Jones IDL – Michigan State
Tony Pauline’s (of Pro Football Network) Analysis:
"“Jones entered the season labeled as a fourth-round pick by scouts who grade juniors, but he’s been disappointing this year. Jones has recorded 10 tackles in nine games this season”"
Round 7, Pick 219: J.D. Spielman WR – Nebraska
Kyle Crabb’s Analysis:
"“This dude is slick. Super slippery in one on one situations, Spielman’s change of direction skills, quickness and vision as a ball carrier pop immediately. He’s fully capable of embarrassing and undressing defenders in the open field with his low build frame and the subsequent low center of gravity that he’s afforded as a result. He’s made some nice plays down the field, too. He’s predominantly a slot but his elusiveness enables him to stack coverage and get vertical.”"
Big Takeaways from the mock draft:
- Sign me up for Patrick Queen at LB right now and I will be thrilled. The Green Bay Packers need to add more speed to that position and Queen will provide just that. He has great range, is a solid tackler, and did very well in coverage situations this past season. In fact, Pro Football Focus had Queen giving up just 165 yards in 355 coverage snaps in 2019. I’ll say it again, sign me up.
- A lot of fans are going to want a WR in rounds 1 or 2, but don’t discount what TE Hunter Bryant can bring to the Green Bay Packers’ passing game. Over his career at Washington, Bryant totaled nearly 1,400 receiving yards at over 16 yards per catch. Including 825 yards this season alone.
- With that said, if Bryant and Quartney Davis are the two major pass catchers added in the draft, my hope is that Green Bay also added a veteran WR in free agency as well.
- I think it flies under the radar a bit, but I’m a big fan of drafting a CB in the middle rounds. The Packers have a great foundation led by Jaire Alexander and Kevin King, not to mention that we saw a breakout season from Chandon Sullivan. However, there is also plenty of unknowns after those three.
- In regards to the John Simpson selection, you can never have too much depth on the offensive line. I’m all for it.
- While I’m glad to see they did select a Tackle, my hope is that it would come earlier in the draft. Tackle is a premier position in the NFL and even if Bryan Bulaga is back, I would still like to see the Packers draft one so he can sit and learn behind him. On the flip side, if Bulaga isn’t brought back, finding a RT should become priority No. 1.
- In Round 7 the Green Bay Packers would add Naquan Jones, which is fine, but that better mean they brought in someone else in free agency. We all saw it in the NFC Championship game, Kenny Clark needs additional help along side of him.
- In this league you can never have too many RBs, so I don’t mind the selection in the 6th round. However with Sewo Olonilua being a bruiser, he could very well be limited at the next level. It’s also worth pointing out that he had off the field issues in 2019.
- I also like what J.D. Spielman could bring to the Green Bay Packers with his ability in the open field and against man coverage. A nice value pick for round 7.
- Overall, I think this is a solid draft. I like the first 4 draft picks and really everything after that is just a crap-shoot anyways.
So there you have it. As the offseason marches on, I will continue creating these mock drafts for the Green Bay Packers as more information about this year’s draft class is learned.
