Green Bay Packers: TEs have Opportunity for a Big Day against Seattle
By Paul Bretl
While at times they’ve been quiet this season, the Green Bay Packers’ tight ends have the opportunity for a big day against Seattle.
Although the tight ends have played a bigger role in the Green Bay Packers’ passing game this season under Matt LaFleur, there have also been stretches where they make little or no impact. Not to mention there have also been some missed opportunities.
Jimmy Graham’s overall production is down from 2018 and he’s had a few key drops as well. Marcedes Lewis has seen more passes come his way this season, but his primary job still remains as a blocker. Meanwhile, Robert Tonyan and Jace Sternberger each missed a good chunk of the season with injuries and they have been eased back into the lineup since returning.
However, this Sunday against Seattle, Green Bay’s tight end unit has a tremendous opportunity in front of them to make a significant impact in the passing game against the Seahawks. And they could very well be a big reason that the Packers come away with the win.
Overall this is a Seattle defense that has struggled to defend the pass as they’ve allowed 263.9 passing yards per game this season, which was the 6th most in the NFL. With tight ends, in particular, being a big contributor to this issue.
During the regular season, tight ends caught 6.3 passes per game against Seattle, good for the 2nd most in football. They would also average 11.5 yards per catch, the 11th most, and tight ends totaled 71.5 yards per game, which once again, was the 2nd most in 2019.
Of course, San Francisco 49ers’ tight end George Kittle had success against Seattle, he does against just about every team. But we saw Kyle Rudolph of Minnesota catch four passes for 50 yards with a touchdown. As well as Tyler Higbee of the Los Angeles Rams go for 116 yards on seven receptions in their last meeting.
And just last Sunday in the Wildcard round, Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert combined for nine receptions and 116 receiving yards in an offense that was primarily led by Josh McCown.
Seattle’s defensive front struggles to generate any sort of pressure on the quarterback, in fact, they were one of the worst in the NFL at it this season. As a result, behind the Green Bay Packers’ stout offensive line, Aaron Rodgers should have plenty of time and with some quick, in-rhythm throws, he and his tight ends could have a lot of success.
Now they just have to take advantage of this opportunity.
