The Green Bay Packers might be in a position to root for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, depending on which way you look at things.

The Green Bay Packers possess a heated rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings. Depending on where in Wisconsin you live, it might be even more heated than the Chicago Bears. Given I’ve lived on the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota my whole life, I know it’s that way for me.

That presents an odd conundrum when the Packers sit at home this weekend watching their division rival kick off in the Wild Card round of the NFC Playoffs. Minnesota is the sixth seed which means they’ll take on the vaunted New Orleans Saints. In most seasons, the 13-3 Saints would’ve earned a first-round bye. Green Bay ruined that this year.

There’s no doubting the Saints’ talent. They are one of the best teams in the NFL, and a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl. If they win, they’ll head to Green Bay the following weekend to take on the Packers.

That’s the worst of three possible matchups for the Packers given their other two options are the injury-depleted Seattle Seahawks and the 8-8 Philadelphia Eagles. Don’t get me wrong, each team is talented, but they pale in comparison to the threat New Orleans would present.

If the Vikings, big underdogs this weekend, are somehow able to take down the Saints, then the Packers would face the winner of the Seahawks-Eagles game. That sounds a lot more favorable than a matchup with the Saints.

The flipside to rooting for the Vikings is it gets them one game closer to the Super Bowl. All of a sudden they are just two victories away from reaching the ultimate game. If they beat the San Francisco 49ers and the Packers win, it sets up Round 3 in the rivalry this year. And we’ve all heard how difficult it is to beat a team three times in one season.

One trophy Packers’ fans constantly hold over Vikings’ heads is their lack of success in the big game. Would Green Bay risk that to make their life easier for one Divisional Round contest?
