8. CC Sabathia

Despite only pitching for the Brewers in 17 games, this list would be incomplete without CC Sabathia. In the middle of a playoff race for the first time in 25 years, Milwaukee traded the farm for half a season of Sabathia. Included in the trade with the Indians were Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, Matt LaPorta and Michael Brantley. It’s safe to say the deal paid off.

Sabathia was a beast down the stretch, starting 17 games from July 8th to September 28th, often on short rest. He was dominant for the Brewers and straight dragged them to the playoffs. He went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA and seven complete games, including three shutouts, with the Brewers.

We haven’t seen a performance like this since and Milwaukee was very grateful for one year of Sabathia. The performance priced him way out of their budget and eventually led to a massive contract with the New York Yankees. Regardless, his performance down the stretch will live forever in Brewers’ lore.
