Green Bay Packers: 5 players that won the game at Chicago Bears
These five players from the Green Bay Packers deserve a lot of credit for helping their team win the season opener against the Chicago Bears.
It was ugly. Oh, boy was it ugly. But at the end of the game, the Green Bay Packers were victorious and head home 1-0, as they prepare to take on another division rival in the Minnesota Vikings. In fact, the Packers better get used to being at home over the next month and a half, considering they’ll only leave the friendly confines of Lambeau Field one time between now and October 27.
We’ll have plenty of time to focus on the future in the future. For now, let’s take a look at five players who helped the Packers secure their first victory of the season.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling
It was a tough night for anybody on Green Bay’s offense. Aaron Rodgers only finished with 203 passing yards and the run game only accrued 47 yards on 22 carries. Still, Marquez Valdes-Scantling found himself with a pretty decent opener. He finished with four receptions for 52 yards, including a bomb for 47-yards in the second quarter. That bomb set the Packers up for their first and only touchdown of the night.
Jaire Alexander
The hype around the Packers’ second-year cornerback is real. Jaire Alexander proved why he could be a star in the making. He was constantly glued to his man and was always around the ball. Even when he gave up receptions, he was right there putting pressure on the receivers. He’s a great weapon for the Packers, and this could be the start of a second-year leap.
Za’Darius Smith
Za’Darius Smith was the highest-priced free agent of the bunch and he showed why against the Bears. He was all over the field and was constantly in the backfield. He’s equally dangerous against the pass and the run and is a huge, athletic body that flies all over the place. His presence was certainly felt and he started his Packers’ career off on the right foot.
Jimmy Graham
Coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, Jimmy Graham is looking to bounce back. Although he didn’t have a prolific night, nobody did in this defensively dominated game. He finished with three receptions for 30 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown was a big one and he showed why he can be a dangerous weapon for Rodgers and this offense. Rodgers literally threw a 50/50 ball up toward the back of the end zone and Graham high-pointed the ball and brought it down for the good guys. More of that please.
Adrian Amos
There’s been an ongoing social media battle all offseason about which safety is better between Adrian Amos and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The two essentially swapped teams in free agency, as Amos signed with the Packers and Clinton-Dix signed with the Bears. Well, Round 1 went to Amos in a unanimous decision. He was all over the field, making multiple plays in the backfield. Oh, and the game-clinching interception when he picked off Mitchell Trubisky in the back of the endzone with under two minutes to play. That’s the type of player they had in mind when Brian Gutekunst signed him in free agency.
