The Green Bay Packers still have a little space in their salary cap if they wish to pursue one of the best free agents remaining.

At this point in the summer, there aren’t a lot of players, or money, remaining in free agency. Those who are left certainly have their warts which is why they remain unsigned. At the same time, money is running very low for almost every team including the Green Bay Packers.

Fortunately, Green Bay still has some money remaining. According to Over The Cap, the Packers still have about $8.5 million in space. Although that’s not a ton of money, that should be enough to at least begin conversations with any of the top remaining free agents.

Speaking of those who are left, here are six of the best that the Packers might be interested in:

Jay Ajayi, Running Back

The Packers already have two capable running backs at the top of their roster in Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones. However, new head coach Matt Lafleur loves to run the ball and Green Bay could use another capable back. Williams and Jones have also proven to be somewhat injury prone and unable to handle large workloads throughout the course of a season. Adding a tough veteran could go a long way to take the run game to the next level.

Dex Bryant, Wide Receiver

Bryant hasn’t played since the 2017 season and has been rumored to be connected with different teams. Still, he remains in play for the NFL and the rumors continue to swirl. Green Bay would likely want nothing to do with Bryant, as they already have a plethora of young receivers they must sort through.

Allen Bailey, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker

The Packers already spent a lot of money in free agency to bring in outside linebackers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith. Still, they could use for some depth behind those two given they’ve never been full-time players in their career. Bailey could play some outside linebacker and defensive end given the circumstance. He’d be another quality player to add to the defense.

Josh Bynes, Inside Linebacker

Green Bay’s thinnest position is at inside linebacker. Blake Martinez is holding down the fort, but if he goes down the Packers are in big trouble. Bynes could add some much-needed depth. He’s not a great athlete, but does well to defend the run. He’d instantly become their second best inside backer if he joined the team.

Eric Berry, Safety

The Packers already addressed the safety position in a major way by signing Adrian Amos and picking Darnell Savage in the first round of the NFL Draft. However, they could choose to work Savage in slowly by bringing on Berry to a one-year deal. He’d provide some veteran leadership and still has enough left in the tank to be a serviceable player.

Tre Boston, Safety

Tre Boston is another safety the Packers could look at to protect Savage from jumping in too far too early. He’s three years younger than Berry and has proven to have a knack for the ball. He’d likely be looking for a longer contract, but that’s something the Packers would have to work out with him. Still, he’d be a depth upgrade if nothing else.
