Milwaukee Brewers: Cases for All-Star candidates
By Kenny Jilek
Mike Moustakas
When a third baseman that is already a plus hitter at that position moves to the typically worse hitting position of second base he’s bound to be one of the best hitters at his new position. Or maybe the number change from 18 to 11 was just what he needed to transform into this Super-Moose form.
Either way, he has been a force in the middle of the order for this Milwaukee Brewers team. His 20 home runs are easily first among second basemen, six ahead of Gleyber Torres of the New York Yankees, and rank him second on a home run heavy team behind Christian Yelich. He has powered this team from the middle of the order sending balls over the fence to all fields.
His .275 batting average is his highest since his first All-Star season with the Kansas City Royals in 2015 and his .930 OPS is the best mark of his career. If he could make the All-Star game two previous times with numbers less impressive than these, then he should be a shoe in this year.
Moustakas should be the National League starter at second base this season. No other second basemen in baseball has an OPS of over .900 and no one comes close to matching his power at the position. Jeff McNeil could challenge for the spot with his very attractive .335 batting average, but his two home runs should make Moustakas the clear choice
Both of these guys are having the best year of their careers and they definitely deserve to at least be on the All-Star team if not starting. There’s a good chance we see a Yasmanian Devil and a Moose loose in Cleveland this year representing the Milwaukee Brewers.
