Milwaukee Brewers: Quarter-season awards

MEDAL RESULT | Best Newcomer
Ben Gamel
Yasmani Grandal
Alex Claudio
The Milwaukee Brewers had a relatively quiet off-season following the 2018 campaign. After making big splashes last year with the signing of Lorenzo Cain and trade for Christian Yelich, they stayed more low-key with their acquisitions.
Yasmani Grandal was the big signing this winter and his contributions have been easy to see. His current OPS of .807 currently ranks him fourth on the team and his nine home runs put him third on the club. Alex Claudio has been very good when he has stayed in his lefty specialist role. Left-handed hitters have a .128 batting average against him and only one extra-base hit. The reason he gets the bronze is that when he has asked to get right-handers out he has failed, a lot. They have a slash line of .300/.364/.433 for a combined OPS of .797 against Claudio.
Ben Gamel gets gold in the best newcomer category because he has done everything that he has been asked to do and more. He is hitting .295 which is second on the team behind only Christian Yelich and his on-base percentage ranks third. Craig Counsell can give any one of his outfielders an off day and know that there will be no let down with Gamel replacing them
The team’s success has largely hinged on his performance this season. In wins, he has a slash line of .340/424/.480 and in losses, those numbers plummet to .244/.320/.289. His WAR at 0.8 is first out of any new acquisition on the team, just beating out Grandal at 0.7 Wins Above Replacement.
