24 Oct 1996: Rightwinger Tony Granato of the San Jose Sharks looks on during a game against the New Jersey Devils at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Devils won the game, 3-1. /

With a top line that can match up with anyone, a good second line needs to control possession and provide scoring while also doing the little things like winning battles in the corners. These three will do just that.

LW Tony Granato

On the left wing, current Badger head coach Tony Granato steps in and provides goal scoring and plenty of grit. After four seasons as a Badger, Granato joined the New York Rangers in 1988, scoring 36 goals and didn’t look back for 13 seasons, scoring 30 four times, including three consecutive seasons from 1990-1992 with the Kings. But he also was plenty tough, racking up six seasons with over 100 penalty minutes and overcoming a major head injury to come back and win the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1997.
NHL Stats: 248 Goals, 244 Assists, 492 Points in 773 Games
Badger Stats: 100 Goals, 120 Assists, 220 Points in 151 Games (1983-87)
2nd Team All-American (1985, 1987), 1988 Olympian (Team USA)
Coach: 2-Years in NHL (2002-2004 with Colorado), Current Coach of Wisconsin Men’s Hockey

RW Brian Mullen

On the right wing, Brian Mullen won’t wow you with his stats, but a right wing who can consistently get you 20 goals and 60 points with minimal time in the penalty box is more than good enough for the second line. Mullen never contended for any awards during his 11 seasons, but he was as steady as it gets. Playing for Winnipeg, the Rangers, Sharks, and Islanders, he scored at least 50 points in his first nine seasons and had at least 18 goals in every season he played. His discipline was also extraordinary, as he never had more than 66 penalty minutes in a season.
NHL Stats: 260 Goals, 362 Assists, 622 Points in 832 Games
Badgers Stats: 31 Goals, 30 Assists, 61 Points in 71 Games (1980-82)
1995 Lester Patrick Trophy (Outstanding Service to Hockey in the United States)
1981 National Championship

C Kyle Turris

In the middle, we get another player currently excelling in the NHL with current Nashville Predator Kyle Turris. Despite only playing one season in Madison, the skilled center was the third overall pick in the 2007 Draft and was a full-time NHL player in 2008. He’s played 11 seasons already despite being only 29 years old and came into his own as an Ottawa Senator, scoring 20 goals and 50 points in three seasons. Known as a skilled two-way center who can be a playmaker as well as a smart defensive player, he balances the intelligent play of Mullen with the hard-nosed style of Granato on the second line.
NHL Stats: 156 Goals, 229 Assists, 385 Points in 664 Games (And Counting)
Badger Stats: 11 Goals, 24 Assists, 35 Points in 36 Games (2007-08)
