Green Bay won’t take a tight end in rounds one or two

When it comes to the Green Bay Packers and the tight end position, most have wondered when will they select one, not if they will take one early on. Well, I’m here to tell you I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see a tight end selected until round three, at the earliest.

T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant are tremendous players who would likely be solid contributors to this team but in today’s NFL, there is a lot of risk with drafting a tight end that high, they just usually don’t pan out. I also don’t think either player will be around to select at pick 30.

Positions like the offensive line, wide receiver, safety, amongst others will be prioritized early on by Green Bay given the depth at tight end in this year’s draft class.

Yes, the tight end will likely play a much bigger role in Matt LaFleur’s offense than it previously has in Green Bay, but the success of the tight end position in this offense is not predicated on being a super athlete and having to get open on your own. Of course, that helps but it is not required.

LaFleur does a very nice job of being able to scheme open the tight end which relieves some of the burden off of that player. Also, it is preferred that the tight end be well-rounded so they can block, as well as line up all over the formation in addition to being a pass catcher.

While they may not be as dynamic as the top tight ends in this class, players like Tommy Sweeney, Foster Moreau, and Trevon Wesco can all be successful mid to late round draft picks in LaFleur’s system.
