Green Bay Packers: 3 mid-round tight ends to target
By Paul Bretl
Tommy Sweeney – Boston College
Unlike Warring, Sweeney isn’t going to be a player that wows anyone with his athleticism but he is a solid blocker and a player that can be relied on almost immediately.
At Boston College, Sweeney didn’t run any complicated routes but he was very polished in what he did run. He won’t be a tight end that stretches the field or wins one-on-one against man coverage, however, he is a threat in short yardage situations and knows how to find the gaps in zone coverage.
As a blocker is where we see Sweeney shine, in the run game he has very good technique and once engaged with a defender he sustains his blocks until the whistle is blown. In pass protection, he was lined up all over the formation and handles blocks in space quite well. His overall ability as a blocker would be a great addition to LaFluer’s offense.
Just as I stated above, Sweeney isn’t an overly dynamic player but neither is Luke Stocker of the Tennessee Titans. Yet in LaFleur’s offense, he was still effective in the passing game because he was schemed open and like Sweeney, he is a very capable blocker.
Early on in Green Bay, Sweeney could see time on the field as a run blocker or in short yardage situations, but he has the potential to develop into a reliable number two tight end option.
