T.J. Edwards – Linebacker

Round 7: New England Patriots

T.J. Edwards really put together a fantastic career and did it all for this Wisconsin Badgers defense. He capped off his final season in Madison with what may be his best performance yet. In 13 games, Edwards would total 112 tackles, 11.5 of which were for a loss, and he would add three sacks, along with three interceptions.

As referenced by his numbers above, Edwards is a great tackler who will use correct form and wrap his opponents up, rather than just lowering his shoulder as we see so many players attempt to do. This helps him tremendously in the running game and he is someone who excels at shooting the gaps to find his way into the backfield.

Although I don’t see Edwards falling to round seven, what does hurt his draft stock is that he is not nearly as athletic as most NFL linebackers we see today and could struggle to make plays in open space as well as in coverage.

With that said, his fundamentals are solid and we know he will be in the correct position to be an effective early down linebacker as well as in obvious running situations. While he may not start initially, I would absolutely take a flyer on Edwards in the later rounds of the draft and whichever team does, will be getting a real football player.
