David Edwards – Tackle

Round 6: Philadelphia Eagles

Seeing Edwards come off the board this late in the draft was a bit of a surprise to me as previously we had seen him as the first Badger selected in rounds two or three of the draft. With that said, there is a deficiency in Edwards’ game that Trapasso finds problematic.

It’s been an unusual path to the NFL for Edwards as he was a high school quarterback and stepped on to Wisconsin’s campus his freshman year as a tight end. Although he has been very effective in college as a tackle, he hasn’t been honing his craft as long as other offensive linemen in the draft, so he still has some areas to work on.

As most Badger linemen are, Edwards is a beast in the running game. He has fantastic size and length that you want in your starting NFL tackle and he does really well squaring up the pass rusher and holding his blocks.

However, footwork is still one of those areas he is working on and as a result, he can struggle in pass protection by getting beat around the edge by the rusher.

All of the physical tools are there and in his short time at Wisconsin, he’s turned into a fantastic player. Yet, some areas are still a bit raw and may take some time to develop, which may be why Trapasso has Edwards going in the sixth round.
