Round 3: Houston Texans

Protecting quarterback Deshaun Watson needs to be a top priority for the Houston Texans this offseason. We saw in 2017 how much they struggled without him, but they have yet to put together an offensive line to keep him from taking hits. Last season the Texans ranked dead last in the NFL in sacks per game allowed, with 3.8. If they hope to get past the first round of the playoffs, the offensive line must be addressed.

Enter in Beau Benzschawel, who made 49 consecutive starts to end his career with the Wisconsin Badgers and was named a first-team All-American in his final season.

Beau’s strengths like many Wisconsin offensive linemen is his fundamentals and ability as a blocker in the running game. He generates great push as a run blocker and will be best in a system that utilizes the power running scheme which will allow him to square up and overpower his defender.

Benzschawel does have some limitations, specifically with lateral movement that can hurt his performance as a zone blocker and in open space. He’s also been referred to as having the build of a tackle which doesn’t help him in pass protection as he can look quite stiff and lose his leverage.

However, given his solid fundamentals, physical attributes and being put into the correct scheme, Benzschawel can be a long time starter in the NFL and make an impact right away for the Houston Texans.
