ARLINGTON, TX – APRIL 26: The Green Bay Packers logo is seen on a video board during the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft at AT /

Drafting an edge rusher, offensive lineman and a tight end in the top 50

Free agency is where you go to find depth but the draft is where you go to find talent and the Green Bay Packers can do just that with three picks inside the top 50. It will be a fantastic opportunity for them to infuse this roster with talented playmakers, which is greatly needed at the moment.

In order for this draft to have a big impact on the upcoming season, there are three positions in particular that need to be targeted within the first two rounds.

Barring a fall in the draft from a top prospect, the Green Bay Packers should be looking to select an edge rusher at 12. Even with the signing of Za’Darius Smith, you can always use another edge rusher, as today’s NFL is all about pressuring the quarterback. Ideally, Montez Sweat or Brian Burns will be available when Green Bay is on the clock.

Picks 30 and 44 can be interchanged between an offensive lineman and a tight end depending on who is available at each selection. On the offensive line, Quinton Spain is taking over at right guard, but adding a tackle such as Dalton Risner would give Green Bay the flexibility to plug him in at left guard if Lane Taylor continues to struggle or take over at  right tackle for an injured Brian Bulaga, who is most likely on his last year anyway. Another name to keep in mind during this portion of the draft is Chris Lindstrom from Boston College.

Finding a reliable tight end is something that has stumped the Packers since the days of Jermichael Finley. Jimmy Graham will be back, but his best days are behind him and Robert Tonyan’s skill set is still quite raw. We know that the tight end will play an important role in the Matt LaFleur offense so finding one is a must. If Green Bay is lucky, Noah Fant will be available at pick 30, otherwise, Irv Smith Jr. at 44 could be an option.
