Green Bay Packers free agency 2019: Ranking Packer’s areas of need
1. Right guard
Really? Right guard is their biggest need? Yes, it is. When you invest as much money as they did into Rodgers last year, you have to do everything you can to keep him upright. With the players they ran out at that position last season, they didn’t accomplish that goal. They need to add a player like Rodger Saffold, Quinton Spain or even reunite with former Packer T.J. Lang.
Adding a player that can start effectively at the right guard spot would help their offense in more than just the passing game. It would allow them to have a better running game that they already planned to build on under LaFleur. The running game sets up the passing game, and Rodgers is one of the best players in the NFL when working off the play-action. However, he needs to be able to sell the action before his right guard gets bowled over and a defensive lineman is in his lap.
Rodgers is still one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the NFL, but they need to add a player to the offensive line to boost the group as a whole to keep him upright. The New England Patriots have done a similar job with Tom Brady. They have built their offensive line to hide his lack of athleticism, and the Packers can do that with the remainder of his career. If they add their right guard of the future this year, that would be the best result of free agency.
