Green Bay Packers: 3 free agent safeties to target
By Paul Bretl
It wasn’t until nearly August of last season that the Arizona Cardinals decided to sign free agent Tre Boston. At just 26-years-old at the time, coming off of a good year with the Los Angeles Chargers, many wondered why Boston had remained unsigned for so long?
Before joining the Cardinals, Boston was coming off of a solid 2017 season where he recorded 79 total tackles, eight pass deflections, five interceptions and played in all 16 games.
Arizona was able to sign Boston to a one year, $1.5 million contract and once again he was able to produce. In 14 games last season, Boston made 79 total tackles, along with nine pass deflections and three interceptions.
But with the Cardinals signing safety D.J. Swearinger at the end of the season, Boston will end up in free agency for the third year in a row and he will be a steal for whichever team is able to sign him.
Boston brings good instincts and route recognition to the safety position, as well as versatility. This allows him to play down in the box with the linebackers covering the short to intermediate routes, while also being able to blitz from the edge.
However, Boston has primarily been used in deep coverage where his speed and tackling ability help to break up passes and limit receivers yards after the catch.
When the 2019 season begins, Boston will be just 27-years-old with plenty of gas left in the tank. Compared to the other two players listed, Boston will give the Green Bay Packers a more cost-effective option at the safety position.
