The Green Bay Packers don’t know when Aaron Rodgers will be retiring, but they have to be prepared when that time eventually comes.

The Green Bay Packers selected Aaron Rodgers with the 24th pick of the 2005 NFL Draft. Rodgers was in contention for the No. 1 overall pick along with Alex Smith. However, the San Francisco 49ers decided to pick Smith with that first pick and started Rodgers’ free fall.

As Rodgers sat in the Green Room for hours waiting for his name to be called, his frustration became evidently clear. Eventually, the Packers selected him toward the end of the first round.

At that time, Green Bay already had their franchise quarterback in Brett Favre. The Packers were coming off a 10-6 season and were in the playoffs just about every season. Because of Favre’s status, Rodgers was forced to sit for the first three years of his career. When he eventually got his opportunity as the full-time starter in 2008, he didn’t disappoint.

Favre was just a year older when the Packers selected Rodgers in 2005 so maybe it’s time for Green Bay to find Rodgers’ heir. They have an extra first round pick to play with if general manager Brian Gutekunst finds his man. Let’s preview five early-round quarterbacks who Green Bay could look to select.
