Green Bay Packers vs Buffalo Bills: 5 matchups to watch
4. Packers linebackers vs LeSean McCoy
LeSean McCoy is no longer the blazing consensus top-5 running back that he was a few years ago. However, he is still shifty, and he does pose a matchup problem for the Packers linebacking group. Former Indianapolis Colt, Antonio Morrison, acquired during a preseason trade, is a decent run defender, but he struggles mightily in pass coverage. This is the exact reason the Packers drafted Oren Burks in the third round out of Vanderbilt.
Burks missed the first two games of the season with a shoulder injury, and he returned in a limited fashion last week. He should be a near full go this week against Buffalo. While he can’t be expected to play every single snap, he should always be on the field when McCoy is. McCoy led the Bills in receptions last season, and he can still do that with the lackluster receiving corps that the Bills are currently trotting out.
Another player that can help against Mccoy is safety/linebacker hybrid Josh Jones. Jones is an athletic specimen that works best when he is using athleticism to his advantage. Rotating he and Burks against McCoy would help keep them both fresh, while also allowing defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to have more playmakers on the field. McCoy can break any play wide open, so they need their linebackers to keep him contained, as he’s their best offensive weapon.
