The Milwaukee Brewers are going back to the playoffs after a narrow victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

The Milwaukee Brewers did a number of amazing things on Wednesday night. First, they swept their division rival the St. Louis Cardinals. And at Busch Stadium nonetheless. This may have been their most complete series all season. Secondly, they clinched a spot in the National League playoffs for just the fifth time in franchise history.

The victory took a complete team effort and some luck along the way as well. Everybody chipped in and it appears the Brewers are clicking at the right time.

The Brewers are at least guaranteed a home game for the Wild Card, as they hold a four-game lead over the Los Angels Dodgers with only three to play. However, they have their eyes set on winning the Central and clinching home-field throughout the playoffs. The Chicago Cubs narrowly escaped a comeback by the Pittsburgh Pirates and only lead the Brewers by half a game.

While we wait for all that to play out, let’s take a look at how this game went down for Milwaukee.

MVP favorite Christian Yelich didn’t have an official at-bat in this game, as he drew five walks in all five plate appearances. However, he did score the only two runs for the Brewers. The first run came here in the top of the third off a solid Travis Shaw single.

Following a couple of walks and a double in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals had the bases loaded with only one out. However, Jhoulys Chacin was able to get out of it with only minimal damage-a sac fly to left field by Jedd Gyorko. Yadier Molina, the next batter, grounded out to third.

The Brewers regained the lead and held on for good in the top of the fifth. Another Yelich walk allowed him to get on base and he advanced to second during Jesus Aguilar’s at-bat. He then scored on a bloop single via Shaw.

It was all up to the bullpen after that, as they pitched four scoreless innings and were quite dominant (with a little luck mixed in). Enjoy the final out by Jeremy Jeffress and the ensuing celebration.

All in all, it’s a good time to be a Brewers’ fan. Postseason baseball doesn’t come around very often so the team should enjoy this one. Hopefully, clinching a wild card spot is just the beginning and this team has much bigger goals in mind.
