1. Football is ruined

There has been a lot of crazy things said about the NFL since they enacted their new roughing the passer (amongst others) rules this season. Many are calling for the demise of the NFL and saying it’s impossible to play defense.

While I was just as upset as the next person about the Matthews’ roughing the passer call, the players must adapt to the new league rules. It appears the league is still figuring out what exactly should and should not be called, but once they do, it’s on the players to adjust accordingly.

Whether that’s fair or not is completely up for debate. However, the bottom line is the bottom line. And player’s availability (some might call it player safety) affects the NFL’s bottom line more than anything else. The NFL can’t afford to continue having players seriously injured week after week. It’s bad for business when their top stars go out right now and it’s bad for business down the road when they can’t attract future top stars who are worried about long-term health. The NFL is a business and they are doing what they have to do in order to survive and thrive in the future.
